heat for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally and still watching
it carefully.
• Remove from heat and add baking soda quickly until it
foams up
• Pour at once into baking paper.
Lava structure?
• What is it
about the
structure of
lava that is
quite
unique?
• How is the
hokey
pokey
structure
the same?
Igneous Rocks
• Igneous (Ignite) – ig·ne·ous
Adjective: 1)(of rock) Having solidified from lava or magma.
•
2)Relating to or involving volcanic processes: "igneous activity".
• Igneous … think ignite … think fire … think lava or magna
Igneous Rocks
• Igneous rocks are formed through the cooling and
solidification of magma or lava.
• Igneous rocks may form either below the surface as
intrusive (plutonic) rocks or on the surface as extrusive
(volcanic) rocks.
What is the difference between magma
and lava?
• Magma is the molten material beneath the Earth's crust.
This material consists of rock, gases, and mineral
• The temperature of the magma can be as high as 5000
degrees.
•
Lava is the molten rock that comes out of a volcano or
from a crack in Earth's surface. The molten rock comes
from the underground magma.
• Lava is just magma that has broken
through Earth's surface.
Activity
• Draw the structure of the earths core.
Crust – 5-50 kms
Mantle – 2900 kms
• Show the magma
• An example of lava
• The Earths crust
• The Earths inner and outer core.
Outer core – 2250 kms
Inner core – 1200 kms
Mt Everest – 8.4 kms
• Extra challenge …. Can you draw it to scale!
Examples
• Crust – 5-50 kms
• Mantle – 2900 kms
• Outer core – 2250
kms
• Inner core – 1200
kms
• Mt Everest – 8.4
kms
