The Eemis Stane
Hugh MacDiarmid
The Eemis Stane
‘the how-dumb-deid’-
The lulled and silent time of night ,
quiet as death
‘ cauld hairst nicht’
just adds to the picture of a silent
moment of a cold harvest night .
“yowdendrift”,
a blizzard – a blinding snowfall,
an “eemis stane”
– a great trembling rock.
. Fug, a standard English word,
means “smoky atmosphere”
In Scots it means moss,
which we might expect to see
covering a stone in the middle
of a field.
hazelraw means lichens –
a kind of mossy organic
substance that grows over rocks.
