WORD OF THE DAY :
 MATTER:
Anything that has a mass and
takes up space.
 PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES: a property
that can be observed without changing the
identity of the substance.
 CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES:
characteristics of a material that cannot
be observed without causing a chemical
change.
WORD OF THE DAY:
 PURE
SUBSTANCE: A sample of matter that
has definite chemical and physical properties
and cannot be changed into a simpler substance.
 MIXTURE:
Combination of two or more pure
substances that are NOT chemically combined
 HOMOGENEOUS:
an even distribution
Molecules are mixed up in
 HETEROGENEOUS:
Molecules are NOT
mixed up in an even distribution
WORD OF THE DAY:
 ELEMENT:
Pure substances that cannot be
separated into simpler substances
 MOLECULE:
Composed of two or more
elements that are joined by a chemical bond.
 COMPOUND:
Pure substance composed of
two or more different elements joined by
chemical bonds
 SOLUTE:
Substance being dissolved
 SOLVENT:
in
Substance the solute is dissolved

1.
WORD OF THE DAY:
 Physical
Change: A change to a substance
that does not destroy a substance, but
changes what it looks like
 Chemical Change: Occurs after a reaction
when what is formed/left over is not the
same as the stuff that was started with.
 Sublimation: Transition directly from a
solid to a gas phase.
 Precipitate: A solid that is formed when
two liquids are mixed
WORD OF THE DAY:
 Periodic
Table: a chart used to organize
the elements
 Atom: smallest unit of matter
 Proton: positively charged particle in an
atom’s nucleus
 Neutron: a neutrally charged particle
found in the nucleus of an atom
 Electron: a negatively charged particle
found in shells orbiting the nucleus of an
atom
WORD OF THE DAY:
Electron
Cloud/Shell: the area
around the nucleus of an atom
where the electrons can be found
Particle Charge: A particle
with an electric charge; Any
particle with a deficit or excess
electrons.

1.
WORD OF THE DAY:
Mendeleev: Scientist known for
constructing the first periodic table,
arranged by atomic mass
 Moseley: later discovered that the
periodic table was associated with
atomic number, not atomic mass
 Periods: Horizontal row of elements
in the Periodic Table
 Groups: (Family) elements in the
same vertical column of the Periodic
Table

WORD OF THE DAY:






Atomic Mass: Total mass of an atom; The
rational (decimal) number in the element box
Atomic Number: Number of protons in an
atom
Mass Number: Number of protons plus
Number of Neutrons (Protons + Neutrons)
Metalloid: Elements that have properties of
both metals and non-metals; found along the
stair-step of the periodic table.
Noble Gases: Group 18 on the periodic table;
these elements are gases that do not usually
combine or react with other elements
Non-Metals: Elements that have dull surfaces
and are poor conductors of electricity, found on
the right of the periodic table
WORD OF THE DAY:
 Ion:
An atom that has a charge
because it added or lost an
electron
 Ionic Bond: A magnetic
connection formed between two or
more atoms as a result of giving
and receiving atoms

5. Reactivity
6. Yields
7. Endothermic
8. Exothermic

10.Malleability
11.Natural Substance
12.Potency
1.
WORD OF THE DAY:
Law of Conservation of Mass: In
a chemical reaction, matter cannot
be created or destroyed; you have
what you started with, it just looks
different
 Reactants: Substances going in to a
reaction (The starting “ingredients”)
 Products: What is made during a
reaction (The ending substance)

WORD OF THE DAY:
 Reaction:
A change to substance
based on the chemical properties of
the other substances it is exposed to
 Reactivity: How likely an element
is to bong or change when exposed to
another element
 Yields: Results in, or becomes
 Endothermic: Taking in energy
 Exothermic: Giving off or
producing energy (releases heat)
WORD OF THE DAY:
1. Flammability:
The ability of
something to burn
2. Malleability: Ability of something to
be hammered or flattened without
breaking
3. Natural Substance: Any substance
that can be found in nature, that man
does not have to make
4. Potency: How strong a chemical is
