Title: Average Atomic Mass
Essential Question: Why does
the atomic mass have a
decimal on the periodic table?
TIME: 2 MINUTES
Average Atomic Mass
EQ:

Why does the atomic mass have a decimal on
the periodic table?
Atomic Mass Review
• ATOMIC MASS = # PROTONS + # NEUTRONS
• This also means,
#NEUTRONS = ATOMIC MASS - # PROTONS
Three Ways to express Atomic Mass
1. Sulfur – 32
2. 32S
3. Sulfur has an average atomic mass of
32.066 amu
Unit for Atomic Mass
• Atomic mass is measured in amu, like your
height is measured in feet (in USA)
• amu= atomic mass unit

Why does the atomic mass have a decimal on
the periodic table?
Isotopes
• Two or more atoms with the same number of
protons, but a different number of neutrons
• The most common isotopes of an atom can be
found more frequently
• Relative Abundance – how frequent an
isotope is found on earth

Why does the atomic mass have a decimal on
the periodic table?
Calculating Average Atomic Mass
Relative abundance of sulfur-32 is 95.00%,
sulfur-33 is 0.76%, sulfur-34 is 4.22%.
