Chapter 3 part III
Mole
• One mole
• 6.02 X 1023 p/mol
• Aka the chemists’
dozen.
One mole of each element
has a different mass.
Why do they have a
different mass?
• Different
atoms
have
different
masses.
AMU vs Molar Mass
• The atomic mass of an atom is equal
to the weight of one mole of that
element in grams/mole.
Molar Mass
• Ionic:
• Gram Formula
Unit
• Covalent:
• Molecular
Mass
Examples:
• Find the molar
mass of different
elements.

Answer
4.00 g/mol
22.99 g/mol
19.00 g/mol
To calculate the molar
Mass of compounds
• You add up the molar mass of each
element found in the compound.
• Example: CO2
• The subscript is for the O.
One Carbon = 12.01 g/mol
Two Oxygens = 2(16.00 g/mol) = 32.00 g/mol
Total is 44.01 g/mol
Molar Mass of
Compounds
• Find the molar
mass of the
following
compounds.
• CO2: 44 g/mol
• Ferrous
Oxide:104
g/mol
• Carbonic Acid:
62 g/mol
