What is an element?
An element is a substance made up of
only one kind of atom.
So…all oxygen is made up of oxygen
atoms.
The boxes on the periodic table represent
a particular kind of element.
How are the elements on Periodic
Table Organized?
The elements on the periodic table are
organized according to their atomic
number.
Ex. Sulfur has an atomic number of 16 to
it comes before Chlorine, which has an
atomic number of 17.
ATOMIC NUMBER
(Z)
the number of
protons in an atom
ATOMIC MASS #
(A)
The total mass of all
of the subatomic
particles in an atom

Atomic number equals the number of ____________
Atomic mass equals the number of ______________
protons
neutrons
+ ____________.
Atomic Math
• The number of protons and
electrons is the same as the
atomic number.
• The number of neutrons is
equal to the atomic mass
minus the number of
protons
