Beginnings
• March 07- University of Manchester
shortlisted for SCI
• April 07- Presentation of the UoM proposal
to Tesco
• September 07- Manchester awarded the
SCI, and a press briefing announced the
Tesco/UoM collaboration forming the SCI
SCI Objective
• “The objective of the SCI shall be to
become…an institution which produces worldclass research and analysis, provides a high
level of teaching in areas including, but not
limited to, achieving a low carbon economy,
tackling climate change, delivering a revolution
in green consumption and helping consumers,
suppliers and retailers create a sustainable
future and disseminates its findings freely…”
Reaching our objective
• With primary, “kick-start”, funding from Tesco,
supporting both research projects and other
“core” activities
• Significant funding for research
– Over 20 projects funded totalling over £2.5M
• The Doctoral Training Centre - Transdisciplinary
– circa10 students per intake
– Significant interest globally, with appx 100
applications for 2009
• Public engagement and research dissemination
Our Research Themes
• Theme 1 Sustainable Consumer Behaviours and
Lifestyles
• Theme 2 Production and Distribution Systems –
technologies, skills and resources
• Theme 3 Climate change and carbon –
mitigation, adaptation and vulnerability
• Theme 4 Making development more sustainable
– synergies with other issues (e.g., poverty,
energy, water, food, environment, health, and
others)
SCI DTC
Vision for SCI DTC is to establish a community of
dynamic and international Early Career
Researchers
• Year 1 – 20% of PhD time:
Undergirding training for Trans-Disciplinary
‘rounded academic’ skills and competences
– To tackle ‘problem oriented’ Grand Challenges eg
Sustainability.
• Year 2 – 10% Specialist contributions
(customised) to SCI research agenda and/or
Tesco ‘mini-projects’, with tailor made terms of
reference
• Year 3, 4 Early Career Researchers

• Or propose a project related broadly to SCI
• Distinction Bachelors and/or Masters
