• Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future.
• Signatory of the Talloires Declaration.
• Committed to environmental sustainability in higher education.
• Incorporate sustainability & environmental literacy in teaching, research,
university operations and outreach.
• ESD is addressed through institutional structures- Campus sustainability
manager is responsible for:
• campus management & operations
• campus planning & design
• construction & renovation
• purchasing
• transport & engagement with the wider community
Skills development
Greening the Potchefstroom Campus
• Paperless meetings.
• +50 green projects on Potchefstroom Campus.
• Recycling is addressed - all 3 campuses.
• Institutional Office made provision for recycling of paper, glass & plastic.
• Solar geysers in residences & energy control devices.
• Project: All 3 campuses ran a competition to encourage students living in
residences to save electricity. R1 million saving in electricity was recorded.
• Project: Mobile solar panels are provided to learners who don't have
electricity at home.
• Competition in Faculty Education Sciences between buildings in 2014 & will
run across the whole campus in 2015.

• BEd programme - Since 2012 compulsory Introduction to EE module for all
pre-service teacher education students in Intermediate, Senior, FET phase
(EDTM 321).
• BEd Hons programme - compulsory Introduction to EE (EDTM 616).
In process
• Submitted a Bachelor of Education Honours in Environmental Education to
the Higher Education Quality Council (HEQC) of the CHE (Council of
Higher Education) in November 2014.
• Working on a Structured MEd in ESD - Joint development between NWU &
University of Namibia.
Teaching and learning: new BEd
programme for 2016
New BEd programme
• Compulsory Introduction to EE module for all pre-service teacher
education students in Foundation, Intermediate, Senior, FET phase
(EDTM 311).
• Reader: Various resources including Fundisa for change material
• Work Integrated Learning (WIL) - 8 modules (8 credit) over 4 years
In 3rd year - Sem I - 1 module will consist of:
1. Administration task
2. Lesson observation and presentation
3. Academic Environmental Education project-/problem-based
assignment
