BACKGROUND
The Environmental Challenge







Climate related disasters: 262 million
Water shortages: 1.8 billion by 2025
Environmental refugees: approximately 50
million
Displaced by flooding: 330 million exposed
Food shortages: 180 million today; 660 million
by 2080
Pollution: 2 million premature deaths per year
Biodiversity: 40% of the global economy is
based on biological product.
BACKGROUND
The Environmental Challenge







1.3 billion working poor (less $2/day)
= 43% of the global labour force.
Unemployment: 190 million globally.
Young job seekers: more than 500 million
new job seekers next ten years.
5.3 billion with no social security.
1.6 billion without access to energy
1 billion slum dwellers.
The developing world, especially Africa
faces more challenges than the developed
countries, in both the impact and capacity
to respond to Climate Change.
BACKGROUND
Economic Crisis and the Old Economy


Old economy: unsustainable and has not
delivered development for all.
The alternative:
- Green growth
-
Green jobs
-
Global Green New Deal
Green Growth at a Glance
Transition to Low-carbon & Green Economy


A global transition to a low-carbon & sustainable economy can
create large numbers of green jobs across sectors of the economy:
Agriculture;
Manufacturing;
Research and Development;
Administration;
Services.
Green Jobs are jobs that help to:
Protect ecosystems & biodiversity;
Reduce energy, material & water consumption through high
efficiency strategies;
De-carbonise the economy;
Minimise or altogether avoid the generation of all forms of
waste & pollution.
Green Jobs: net employment effect

New Job Creation: Renewable energy sector; energy
performance service, companies; mobility services.

Elimination: Mining; packaging (materials discouraged or
banned)

Substitution: Shifting from fossil fuels to renewables,
automobiles to mass transit, waste disposal to recycling, primary
metals, production to secondary production.

Transformation: Existing jobs greened along with changed
workplace, practices and methods.

Supply-chain effects (steel for wind turbines).

‘Radiating Out’ Greening core areas (energy, transport) has
potential to “radiate” downstream
Key Message

Acting now on Climate Change presents the best
way possible to overcome the challenges of the
global economic crisis through investment in propoor, job-rich and sustainable “green growth.”

The environment and the economy can no longer
be considered in isolation.

Era of “grow first, clean up later” is over.

Neither adaptation nor mitigation alone can avoid
all climate change impacts; however, they can
complement each other and together can
significantly reduce the risks of climate change.
Key Message



Disasters have no boundaries, as a result it
requires an integrated and coordinated approach
with other international, regional and national
organisations.
There is more to gain from looking at climate and
weather, not only as hazards, but also as a
“resources.”
There is enormous potential for the creation of
decent and green job opportunities through a well
structured transition process.
