CC ADAPTATION AWARENESS IN RAIL
• COP21 helped to put CC topics on the agenda of rail companies
• Adaptation/resilience has attracted interest from top management in
some rail companies (like SNCF) thanks to COP21.
• Mitigation is high on the agenda as rail is promoted as part of the
solution to climate change;
• Mitigation and adaptation/resilience (as well as circular economy ?)
needs to be considered together as elements of a new decarbonised
economy and industry. Also valid for standards ?

CC ADAPTATION IN RAIL
• Adaptation shall not mean returning to 28 national markets
(interoperability directive);
• Climate conditions can vary heavily (Helsinki versus Madrid);
• Single European standards adapted to a too a wide range of climatic
hypothesis may prove very costly;

NEEDS OF STANDARD WRITERS
• A better awareness of the new post COP21 context ;
• More guidance to help them to translate this in their field of expertise;
• Climate data preferably the same for all rail standards or even for the
whole transport sector ? Potential synergies with EU roadmap for
climate services as well as COPERNICUS programme ?
• Support from research results (better understanding of vulnerabilities
as well as possible adaptation options);
