Compare Okonkwo to Oedipus
Some people say that man-made climate change—the
result of CO2 and other “greenhouse gases” released
into the atmosphere over the last century—has resulted
in a higher global temperature, causing devastating
changes to the homeostasis of the planet. This higher
temperature will eventually result in a melting of the
polar ice caps, both north and south. Climate scientists
predict that a cataclysmic sea-level rise will be the
result of this, forcing a migration from the low-lying
coastal areas around the world of over 1 billion people,
the largest migration the earth has ever seen. The
Pentagon states that climate change is the greatest
threat to national security.
Some people say this is all “hooey”, “junk science”,
“environmental scare tactics”, “the biggest hoax ever”.
What do you think?
Okonkwo’s tragic flaw is his
unwillingness to appear weak. In
one well-constructed and wellwritten paragraph, explore how
Okonkwo’s tragic flaw leads to his—
and his village’s—demise.
Discuss possible themes of the novel.
Remember that a theme is NOT a
topic, a theme is a topic + an opinion.
An example from The Great Gatsby:
NOT A THEME: money
Possible Theme:
Money can’t buy happiness
Money is the root of all evil
