What is CIRCLE?
 A European Networking project aiming at
implementing a European Research Area (ERA)
in the field of climate change impacts and
adaptation research, funded by the EC – FP6
 Aims at establishing cooperation among national
research programmes of European and related
countries

Consequences of climate change for policy
making in the Nordic countries
Funded projects:
 Climate change: A Regional Assessment of Vulnerability and
Adaptive capacity for the Nordic countries (CARAVAN)
 Climate Change adaptation in Norway, Sweden and Finland
- Do research, policy and practice meet? (CARePol)
 Climate change, community response and multilevel
governance (Community Response)

CIRCLE NOR group - Meeting
Conclusion Nordic project Meeting
 actions are expected to be top down, but such an
approach may not be sufficient;
 bottom-up activities with national and regional support
are more likely to be carried;
 continuation of Nordic cooperation, but including our
neighbors:
 use parallels to existing Agenda 21 and long-term
sustainable development cross-sector work for
further cooperation;
 need to better study non climate issues like socioeconomic and political variables and
 need to include high-emission scenarios in adaptation
studies.
