Transcript 3rd National Platform meeting_23 July 2012

A national platform for institutional learning
and policy action on NRM in Ethiopia
Presentation – 23 July 2012
1
Logic and justification
•
•
•
•
•
Agriculture, water, forests, food security, it is all connected (Rio+20);
need for integrated approaches for sustainable development
In addition, the effect of climate change and variability in Ethiopia well
established, but limited institutional capacity to respond (DFID/SCIP)
Lack of systematic comparison of what technologies and approaches
work where, when, and why (Merrey & Gebreselassie, 2011)
Weak institutional linkages, sectoral policies, fragmented investments
deter cross-institutional learning, local action, policy implementation
Adaptive capacity of communities and responsiveness of institutions to
facilitate action in NRM need to be integrated in the development and
policy arena
 A proactive platform for governmental institutions, NGOs, donors,
private sector and civil societies, etc. to develop collective action on
NRM for sustainable development in Ethiopia

– Alignment with government agenda
• Longer-term impact goals
– Global interest in sustainable development and climate change and
associated financial and institutional support
– Commitment of Ethiopian government to improve NRM for food security
and environmental services
