about?
Topic 2: Climate and Change
(Compulsory Topic)
In this topic you will learn:
• Climate Change through time
• Natural and Human causes of climate change
• The future of the world’s climate
• How are humans and the natural environment
effected by climate change?
Climate Change through time
L.O. To describe how the earth’s climate has
changed through time.
What does Climate mean?
The weather conditions prevailing in an area in
general or over a long period .
What does Climate Change mean?
Any change in global temperatures and precipitation
over time due to natural variability or to human
activity.
Where do you think
these impressions
might be of?
How long ago in time
do you think they
were?
In your tables come up
with an order from
oldest to youngest of
the photos/ artists
impressions you have
been given.
Jurassic- artist’s
impression of
Antarctica 206 to 140
million years ago.
Cretaceous- artist’s
impression of
Antarctica 140 to 65
million years ago.
Quartenary
interglacial - artist’s
impression of
400,000 years ago.
Quartenary glacial artist’s impression of
10,000 years ago.
Little Ice Age- artist
impression of the UK
Atacama desertpresent.
Antarctica- present.
Future- artists
impression of the
billions of years in the
future
What does that tell you about the Earth’s
climate?
1) State how many times
temperatures have risen to
be warmer than average
over the past 450,000
years.
2) When was the temperature
lowest?
3) Describe the changes
during the past 450,000
Stick the graph into your books and then
years. (Be specific about
answer the questions on the board. If you temperatures and years).
finish answer the extension questions on
the whiteboard.
1) State how many times temperatures
have risen to be warmer than
average over the past 450,000 years.
5 times (9 peaks)
2) When was the temperature lowest?
About 25,000 years ago. It was 9°C
below the 1961-1990 average.
3) Describe the changes during the past 450,000 years. (Be specific about
temperatures and years).
About 410,000 years ago the temperature reached 2°C above average before falling to a
minimum of 8°C below average 330,000 years ago. Temperatures climbed rapidly to about
3°C above average 325,000 years ago. Between 325,000 and 265,000 years ago
temperatures fluctuate but dropped to almost 9°c below average before increasing to
another maximum 245,000 years ago with temperatures 2°C above average. A long period of
general cooling occurred between 245,000 and 145,000 years ago with a minimum of 9°C
below average reached. Once again, there was a rapid warming with a maximum of 3°C
above average reached 130,000 years ago. A prolonged period of cooling then occurred with
some fluctuation to a minimum of 9°C below average 25,000 years ago. There has been a
general warming trend since that point with a maximum about 5,000 years ago of 2°C above
average.
