should
Internationalism be
Pursued?

The United Nations
O
The UN is linked to internationalism
because it is an international
organization that includes many
countries that work in creating peace
throughout the world. By working to
create peace and friendly relations
between nations, the UN has the idea
of making the world (not just the
countries involved), a better place for
everyone to live in. Also, the countries
where peace is made are impacted by
what the UN has done and may then
have an internationalistic perspective
and will want to interact with other
nations to pursue their national
interests and goals. In this case,
internationalism is pursued fully
because peace is trying to be made
which could result in nations taking
on the ideas of the UN.
NAFTA
O
The North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA) is linked to
internationalism because it is an
agreement between Canada, the USA,
and Mexico. The agreement is that
tariffs and other fees associated with
trade are eliminated when the
countries trade with one another. This
promotes free trade between these
three countries which links to
internationalism because it connects
the countries together. Also, by trading
with one another, the economies of
each country are boosted and friendly
relations between the countries are
made. In this case, internationalism is
pursued to a full extent because the
countries have the ideals of
cooperating with one another to
achieve their goals (ex. increasing
economy, getting certain goods, etc.).
NATO
O
The North Atlantic Treaty
Organization (NATO) is linked to
internationalism because it is a
military alliance between Canada,
the USA, and parts of Europe. This
alliance states that these
countries will help to defend each
other and ensure the security of
the rest of the world from threats
(ex. wars). By being apart of NATO,
these countries are cooperating
with one another to achieve their
interests of keeping the world a
safe place to live in.
Internationalism is pursued fully
in NATO because they share the
ideals of keeping the world safe,
and knowing that they have to
cooperate to do this.
WTO
O The World Trade Organization is
linked to internationalism because
it is an institution that encourages
the trade between nations. Also, it
resolves any trade disputes that
occur between nations. By doing
this, the WTO encourages the
cooperation of nations in order to
increase their economies (stabilize
their economies) and to have
friendly relations with one another.
In this case, internationalism is
being pursued fully because it
helps in solving trade problems
between nations which causes the
nations to band together and
resolve the problems.
The Kyoto Protocol
O The Kyoto Protocol is a treaty that
has over 160 members (nations)
that have agreed to fight global
warming and bring climate change
under control. This protocol is
linked to internationalism because
it involves many nations that are
working together to achieve the
same goal. This goal is to bring the
world’s climate change under
control and to cut greenhouse gas
emissions down. With the Kyoto
Protocol, internationalism is being
pursued to a full extent because it
involves many countries that have
the same interests and are
working together to fulfill these
interests.
Foreign Aid
O
When a disaster happens, many nations
donate money towards the relief effort. They
do this in order to help in the aid effort, so the
devastated country can recover from the
terrible disaster that has just hit them. Money
and people are sent overseas and from all
around the world to the sight of disaster in
order to help in any way they can so they can
help the people recover. By doing this,
countries are having an internationalistic
perspective of helping people outside of their
country. Also, the nations who are donating to
the devastated country are cooperating with
one another in order to reach the same goal.
In this case, internationalism is being and
should be pursued fully as aid is needed by
the devastated country in order to recover.
Also, internationalism is occurring fully
because nations are thinking about others
and are banding together to achieve a goal.
World Peace
O World peace is linked to
internationalism because it can
only be achieved if all the nations
throughout the world are working
together to achieve it. By working
to achieve world peace, there are
nations banding together to create
friendlier relations between other
nations. Due to this, the nations
that have turned peaceful can
then turn other nations into
peaceful ones as well. In this case,
internationalism is being pursued
fully. This is because there are
nations with a similar interest
(achieving peace) and they are
working together to reach that
goal.
WWF
O The World Wildlife Fund is an
international organization that has
the goal of stopping the destruction
of the world’s environment. Also, it
has other goals dealing with climate
change, pollution, and endangered
species. It involves the support of
many nations that donate money
towards the cause. The WWF gives off
an internationalistic perspective
because it involves nations all across
the world donating money towards
the organization. In this case, the
WWF pursues internationalism fully
because they have nations working
together to achieve the goal of
making the planet a cleaner and
better place.
War on Terror
O
The War on Terror is an international
military campaign that involves the United
States, the United Kingdom, NATO
countries, and non-NATO countries. Their
goal is to eliminate (terrorist) groups who
are seen as a threat to the US and its
allies. By participating in the War on
Terror, many nations are working together
to get rid of groups and people who are
threats to them. Due to this, an
internationalistic perspective is made as
the nations involved are banding together
to eliminate terrorist threats. In this case,
internationalism is being pursued to a full
extent because nations from around the
world are being connected and are
cooperating in order to achieve the task of
making the earth a safer place to live.
WHO
O
The World Health Organization (WHO)
is an international agency that travels
around the world in promoting the
highest possible health for all people.
They are financed by contributions
made by countries, so that the WHO
can travel throughout the world and
provide health to all who need it (ex.
shots to prevent illness, disease
control, etc.). The WHO gives off an
internationalistic perspective
because it involves many nations
working together to promote better
health to people who do not have it.
In this case, internationalism is being
pursued fully because nations are
cooperating with one another to
achieve better health for everyone in
the world.
