Project summary
• Supporting community groups in
Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
• to act on climate change in their local area
• with dedicated support offered to 10
communities, including Ashby
• Partnership between RCC, De Montfort
University and local authorities in
Leicestershire area
• For 10 chosen groups, help with
• Action planning
• Ideas for projects and events
• Running successful groups
• Local Climate Change Grant scheme
• Up to £5000 available for each community
group
• To be launched on May 5th 2010
Food and Water
Tree planting (e.g. community orchards, fruit/nut trees), Apple Day, Apple
Press, New Allotment Provision, Gardensharing, Community Supported
Agriculture, local food competition for restaurants...
Commerce and Finance
Loyalty cards for local shops (e.g. Wedge in Kensington, ShopLocal in
Faversham, Kent), local high street re-usable bags (GRAB bags in Bristol),
local currencies in Brixton, Totnes & Lewes, new social enterprises...
Waste
Community recycling collections (Tilton Green), workshops making things
from reused materials, swap shop days (e.g. “Swishing”), swapping spare
resources between businesses, composting training days...
Energy
Bulk-buying (energy, solar panels, etc), energy saving competitions (“Energy
Neighbourhoods), community-owned renewable energy (Baywind), courses
on making DIY wind turbines/solar panels (V3), renewable energy events...
Travel
Events to promote more sustainable transport choices (e.g. cycling, public
transport), personalised travel planning (e.g. Travelsmart), promoting vehicle
sharing (Leicestershare, car pool groups), walking school buses...
Built Environment
Open eco homes (“Ecovation” in Oxford, Transition Leicester’s Open Eco
Houses), energy efficiency fairs (e.g. Tilton Green Fair), energy audits and
renewable energy for community buildings (halls, churches)...
Bringing it all together
Run an Ecoteam group, run a 6-month Climate Action Group project, make a
plan or vision for the future of your community (Forest Row, Totnes), work on
other issues (health, education, local environment)...
