DFID AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Delivering on our commitments
Primary purpose of this process is to outline how we are
going to deliver on our climate change commitments. To
do this we need to;
• Understand the challenges
• Define our role
• Make it happen
• Work with others
DFID AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Understanding the challenges
Climate change has huge implications for development.
It is both an opportunity and a threat. We have identified
three key challenges;
• Build a fair and equitable global deal
• Promote low carbon development
• Help countries adapt to climate change
DFID AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Defining our role
Climate change will affect all aspects of the fight against
poverty. Our response to climate change is therefore the
responsibility of all those working to reduce poverty.
• The role of the UK government and DFID within this
• The role multilaterals
• The role of the international community
• The role of civil society
• The role of the private sector
DFID AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Making it happen
To meet these challenges, DFID will need to work on
climate change across the organisation, making use of a
range of activities (e.g. research, demonstration,
capacity building etc.). We will also need to balance our
efforts between…
• The immediate goal of the outcome we want from the
UNFCCC negotiations in 2009
• The longer term aim of helping developing countries
achieve low carbon development and climate change
adaptation
DFID AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Work with others
DFID will need to work closely with all its partners,
including civil society. In the coming months, we would
like to do the following with NGOs
• Explore ongoing policy issues
• Develop up our work plans
• Identify opportunities for joint working
