WP 3.4 – Environment context and modelling
Objectives
•To evaluate the impact of traffic from streets in
the vicinity of school buildings, on their IAQ.
•To evaluate the impact of climate change on IAQ
in the schools assessed.
SINPHONIE
WP 3.4 - Kick Off Meeting - Hungary
WP 3.4 – Environment context and modelling
Tasks
1. Impact of traffic on IAQ
The evaluation of the impact of the outdoor
to the indoor environment, and the
corresponding transfer of pollutants will be
calculated by the use of network calculation
models, together with statistical and transfer
models, combined with local measurements

WP 3.4 – Environment context and modelling
Tasks
1. Impact of Climate Change on IAQ
Sub task 2.1 – Compilation of climatic and air quality data under climate change scenarios
• compile the most recent climatic data and air quality simulations that have been
generated for Europe at high spatial resolution,
• Analyse data in order to provide climatic and air quality data over the study domains
of SINPHONIE project
Sub-task 2.2- Impact of climate change on indoor air temperature (regional climate
models).
• predict changes in temperature by seasons and months on the basis of regional climate
models
• predict its consequences on the thermal comfort of children at school

Proposed Work Plan
Tasks
1. Impact of traffic on IAQ
Mesoscale modelling for the evaluation of the
pollutants concentration
in the region where the schools are located
Calculation of the traffic induced pollution from
the streets in the area surrounding the schools
Extract boundary conditions around the school
with the aid of (CFD) modelling taking into
consideration the characteristics of the area
Run indoor model

Issues to be addressed
Tasks
1. Impact of traffic on IAQ
SINPHONIE
• Each country must run their own models
• Choice of models, criteria of input data and
expected results
• Will the models be coupled?
• Measured meteorological and other
parameters necessary
• Resolution (eg. 2x2 km)
• Normalisation and generalisation

city structure difficult to predict –
need to work with scenarios of
different landuse
nesting with a smaller model based on
the climatic model results
