Asia Pacific region vulnerability
Over 50% of the total world disasters
Over 70% of lives lost to disasters occur in
this region
75% of global flood mortality risk is in
Bangladesh, China and India
GDP losses of between 2-20%

What did we find?
There is a need for a significant increase in child centred
DRR
Children can be respected, empowered providers and
recipients of DRR.
Children can be risk analysers, designers and
implementers, communicators and mobilisers for DRR
Integrating DRR activities into daily life at community level
is key, so that values and behaviour reinforce each other
in a virtuous circle
Integrating DRR into existing policy and practice rather
than separation should be the guiding principle
There is an opportunity for child centred DRR reporting to
be folded into CRC reporting

What we need now
• Political determination to support community
based and child centred DRR
• Streamlining of knowledge development and
sharing to support community based and
child centred DRR
• Promoting clarity, coherence and
consistency to support community based
and child centred DRR
• Alignment, cooperation and support for the
implementers of child centred DRR
