MACC follows
Caribbean Planning for Adaptation to
Global Climate Change (CPACC) :: (GEF)
and
Adapting to Climate Change in the
Caribbean (ACCC) :: (CIDA)

FIVE COMPONENTS
Build capacity to assess vulnerability and risks
associated with climate change
Build capacity to reduce vulnerability to climate
change
Build capacity to effectively access and utilise
resources to reduce vulnerability to climate
change
Public Education and Outreach
Project Management

BUILD CAPACITY TO ASSESS
VULNERABILITY AND RISKS
ASSOCIATED WITH CLIMATE CHANGE
Under CPACC 18 monitoring stations installed
>Water level
>Barometric pressure
>Air temperature
>Relative humidity
>sea-surface temperature
>wind direction
>wind gusts and speed
>rainfall

MACC:
– Upgrade of existing monitoring stations to improve
performance and data reliability
– Installation and implementation of Continuously
Operating Reference Stations (CORS)
– Support RAC : archiving and quality assurance
– Strengthen capacity CIMH : maintenance and
operation
– Training to Meteorological offices to manage stations,
expand applications and use of data, installation and
use of CORS

Generating climate change scenarios:
– Statistical downscaling of regional climate models
• Develop regional climate change projections
(ACCC
– Dynamic downscaling
• Use of PRECIS regional model (50km and 25km)
• Staff from UWI; CIMH, PIU trained in operation
• eight experiments designed – four at Meteorology
Institute, Cuba; 2 at UWI Mona; 1 each at UWI St.

Component 2: Build capacity to reduce
vulnerability to climate change
Build capacity to identify and analyse policy
options for adaptation to climate change in
selected sectors
Aimed at reducing vulnerability in those sectors

2.1 Country Level Sectoral Adaptation
Strategies
Develop Adaptation Strategies for:
• Water Sector
• Agricultural Sector
• Tourism
In process will look at IWSM as an Adaptation
Strategy

Other Activities:
• Costing Impacts of CC (UKCIP
Methodology?)
• Optimising choice using Risk
Management Approach
• Introducing use of other tools e.g.
Guidelines for Integrating CC Impact
Assessment in EIAs

Upgrading infrastructure norms
• · Incorporation of climate change
consideration into region’s CDM strategy
• · Improved collaboration between National
Disaster and Meteorological Offices
• · Upgrade building codes
• Identify financial incentives from Insurance
and Mortgage banking industries

COMPONENT 3: Build capacity to
effectively access to utilize resources to
Minimise Costs of Climate Change
• Preparation of regional position for
negotiation on Climate Change at relevant
international fora
14
____________________MACC
3.1 Development of a Regional Agenda
Support for the development of a regional
position and negotiation strategy for
UNFCC and other international
organisations
Feed results from Components 1 and 2 into
National Communications
15

3.2 Development of a Regional Strategy for
Adaptation to Climate Change
Development of regional climate change
adaptation strategy and action plan
16

COMPONENT 4: Public Education and
Outreach
Begin implementation of the PEO Strategy
and in particular:

identified in PEO Strategy and disseminate
to key targets – policy-makers and decision
makers, general public, private sector and
school children
19
