Copyright
Jamie Long
What is copyright?
 Copyright is the exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a
fixed number of years, to:
 Print
 Publish
 Perform
 Film
Or record:
 Literary Material
 Artistic Material
 Musical Material
Basically, it is legal protection for peoples work to save it from being copied.

Why is copyright important?
 Copyright is important to creators such as writers, artists or publishers that
own rights because it provides them with a legal right of ownership of their
work that has been produced by them.
 Having copyright means that creators can protect their original piece of
work from being copied or republished by somebody else. It also gives
them control over their work, which they have worked hard to produce.

An example?
 At the beginning of 2015 Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were sued $7.4
US dollars after a lawsuit was filed against them by the children of Marvin
Gaye.
 Gaye’s children claimed that Robin and Pharrell copied parts of Marvins
1977 hit, ‘got to give it up’ in their chart topping song ‘Blurred Lines’ which
was released in 2013.
 You can find the notes from Marvin Gaye’s song HERE
 You can find the similar notes in 'Blurred Lines'
 An article on the situation can be found on the following page.
 I personally believe that it was the correct decision to sue Robin Thicke and
Pharrell Williams, as this was an obvious breach of copyright.

Personally?
 Personally, I believe that copyright is a good idea. I think it protects peoples
talents, ensuring that they can continue to create products without fear of
it being copied or reproduced. It ensures that creators do not lose out on
profit from their products; if the products are copied they could be sold
somewhere else for a cheaper price, this means that the original creators
lose out on income.
 In some circumstances, I believe that copyright laws are too strict in cases
where people unintentionally produce similar products from their influences
over time. In the case of ‘Blurred Lines’ it was an obvious breach of
copyright; on the other hand some people may have unintentionally
created something similar without realising. It depends on the given
situation.
