Little or no authority control
Obsolete MARC fields were still in use
A legacy of very brief provisional records
The catalog was filled with inactive titles and items
– Items that were claims returned, missing, billed, lost and
paid had not been vetted or purged since before 2008
– Orders had not been archived since before 2008
• Obsolete material and items types had not been vetted
or removed
• CAT Dept. was overstaffed but under-trained
• No training or preparation for RDA
• Poor relations with other departments and divisions
“It Was the Best of Times,
It Was the Worst of Times …”
• We began with the end in mind
A beautiful cataloged arising from the abyss!
– Throughout 2013 we:
• Built bridges
• Made the problems known to all stakeholders
• Selected a vendor
“A Dream, All a Dream…”
• Who was going to fix this for us?
• What’s added value?
– Support the library’s mission
– Enhanced user discovery
– Ease work load
– Sustainable

with Load Profiles
• Output profiles
– That’s easy; there’s only one in Sierra!
– Make sure to send only what you want
• Input profiles
– Very customizable but you must know your data
– Who are your record vendors? How do they craft
their records?
– Is there data you need or want to protect?
• Test, Test, Test!
Freeze!
• Existing data cannot be edited while the
catalog data is out with your vendor.
– Communicate this early and often
– Freeze your catalog maintenance
• Make contingency plans for editing records and
tracking maintenance
• We protected the call number and portions of the
fixed fields to continue to be able to correct some
errors
• I’ve loaded my data back in my catalog,
now what?
– Review your reports
– Resolve un-matched headings
– Resolve multiple matches
• Set up your routine for maintenance
So what about RDA?
“A person attempting to travel two roads at
once will get nowhere” - Xunzi
RDA?
• But we are a public library!
– What about our combined imprint records?
– What about GMD’s?
– What about all those 3xx fields?
Yes! RDA
• Embracing hybridization
