The Online Library Catalog
Using the Computer to Find a Great Book…
The Fairfax County Public Schools Online Library
Catalog is available from any Web browser.
You may search the online catalog from your
classroom, your home, or the library
The web address is at http://libcat.fcps.edu.
Library Selection
•You may search under ALL which will search all the FCPS
schools
•The best way to search is by school.
•Use the drop down feature to find Braddock ES
•Now you can find materials that are in the Braddock ES library.
In Quick Search, the user may start a keyword search. A keyword
search will find the word in any part of the field specified, in any
order.
Everything - the catalog will search for the word you type in
subject, title, and author.
Subject – the catalog will search for subject words only.
Title – the catalog will search for title words only.
Author – the catalog will search for author names only.
Keyword
A title search for “magnetism” will find titles with “magnetism”
anywhere in the title.
•The results for this search by ALL produced 268 titles.
•There are 4 titles when searching by Braddock ES
Call Number
Title
Author – last name, first name, dates
The Location is the item’s current status.
•When
your library has been selected, those items found from your
library are displayed.
•If
you have searched with ALL libraries, all titles found will list all
the libraries which own the title and have a copy available to
checkout.
See More
Format Icon indicates the format of the title: book, video, etc.

To select one item on the hit list, click the See More
button. It presents a view of the bibliographic record.
Power Search
A Power Search is another type of keyword search which allows
the user to combine different types of searches, such as author,
series, subject, and title.
The search may be limited by type (e.g. Book, Video, Ref-Book,
AV or Periodical) or by location (e.g. Fiction, Paperback,
Biography, etc.)
Be sure to select the desired library in the Library field.

Back Up
Use the Back Up button when searching, instead of the
browser’s navigational button. Using the Back Up button makes
sure that you won’t lose your information.
New Search
The New Search button clears your search and returns you to
the Quick Search screen.
Keepers (discussed later)
Previous/Next
Moves to the next page of 20 titles; or, when viewing a single
record selected from a list of records, use these buttons to
view the next or previous record in the list.
See More
To select one item on the hit list, click the See More button. It
presents a view of the bibliographic record.
Full Bibliographic Record
Hyperlink
By selecting a blue hyperlink, a new search is performed for a
series, subject, author, etc..
Additional Searches
The additional search buttons (More By This Author, More Like
This, Focus in On, or Try these too) can be used to search for other
works.
Internet Hyperlinks
Bibliographic records for Electronic books contain a link to the
website and its search page. Links are also available to teaching
materials, contents notes, etc. for other materials.
For an electronic book, the link indicates “Click here for access.”
This link is to a book’s Table of Contents from the Library of Congress.
Click Internet site to view Table of contents.
Copy Level Holdings
When viewing the Full Record, scroll to the bottom of the page to
see Copy Level Holdings, displaying each item’s school, call
number, item group, and current location (noting if the item is
checked out).
Keepers list
To create a list of selected titles from a Results/Hit List, click the
“Keep” box next to the desired title.
When you have selected all titles you want, click “Keepers” to see the
list.
You may now select a Sort order, enter an Email address to
receive your list on your own workstation, or Print your list.
Selecting a Library will cause the system to add call numbers to
titles owned by that library.
Select the “view of records” you desire: All, Full, Brief, or
Bibliography.
This example shows a list in “brief” format, with the copy owned by
Eagle View ES noted with its call number.

Either of these two links can be used as a favorite/bookmark or as a
home page setting. Also, your school can use the site-specific link
to access the FCPS Library Catalog from your own school home
page.
