The Carbon Cycle
In the most simple terms, the Carbon Cycle is the movement of Carbon through the
spheres of the Earth’s systems.
In the most simple terms, the Carbon Cycle is the movement of Carbon through the
spheres of the Earth’s systems.
Step One ~ A plant removes carbon from the atmosphere, to make sugars and biomass
(plant parts). This is photosynthesis (6H2O +6CO2 => 6CO2 +C6H12O6)

Step Two ~ An animal eats the plant, and excretes it as feces and respiration.
6O2 + C6H12O6 => 6H2O + 6CO2

Step Three ~ Some of the carbon goes back into the ground as fertilizer
Some goes into the air as CO2, as animals breath
Some goes into the air as CO2, as plants decompose
Some goes into the ground to make FOSSIL FUELS. Respiration is also the
equation for the combustion inside a car, or plane, or power plant.

Step Four ~
Some enters the ocean as dissolved gasses
Atmosphere can hold massive
amounts of CO2. Large amounts go
into it, but hug amounts have then
left and gone into the ocean.

The oceans absorb HUGE amounts
of CO2, but the limit is being
reached, and the oceans will not be
absorbing much more.

The geosphere holds most of the
carbon, in mountains and rocks.
This cycle takes billions of years.

Stores of plant energy (fossil fuels), will
release CO2 into the atmosphere as a result
of combustion (fast respiration). Because
the Hydrosphere and Biosphere cannot
absorb any more, and the Geosphere takes
billions of years, it will stay in the
atmosphere. Rate of climate change will
(must) increase.

People like to say that climate change is part of a cycle. They are right.

cycles take thousands of years, and we are seeing climate changes in 10’s of
years.

Carbon does have something to do with it, that much is obvious. CO2 in
ppm has never been above 300 parts per million.

of half-measures, of
soothing and baffling
expedients, of delays, is
coming to its close. In its
place we are entering a
period of consequences.
