David Suzuki
The Greatest Canadian
Ever.
David Suzuki is perhaps most famous as an
environmental activist – working to protect
and preserve our planet Earth.
Suzuki is an award winning
scientist for his works to
prevent the effects of global
warming. As a child, David was
confined to internment camps
because of the Japanese
bombing in pearl harbour. The
effect of the internment caused
David to study the
environment. Growing up, he
has been fighting with a band
of skeptics who believed that
global warming was not real.
Later on, scientists proved that
ice caps were melting and that
David was right.
In order to spread his message, David
Suzuki enjoyed giving presentations to large
groups of people. This spread to the result of
things like earth hour to preserve our earth
from global warming.
David Suzuki is a
charismatic and
enthusiastic
environmental advocate
– his efforts to stimulate
interest in the natural
world and combating
global warming are
powerful and inspiring.
Such works include his
programs Suzuki on
Science, and The Nature
of Things. He has written
many books and given
many speeches on the
importance of being a
sustainable society, and
has inspired the new
generation to take
action.
“Work towards balancing human needs with the Earth's ability to sustain all
life. Our goal is to find and communicate practical ways to achieve that
balance.”
Today, David Suzuki’s name is almost synonymous with
environmentalism because of his tireless work towards his one goal;
“[Working] towards balancing human needs with the Earth's ability to
sustain all life.” The least of his efforts to achieve this would be the
‘Nature Challenge’, a list of simple rules everyday people can follow
to reduce their environmental footprint. His greatest accomplishment
would be the co founding of the David Suzuki Foundation in 1990, a
continent-wide organization that works to raise awareness on
environmental issues with the population as well as the government.
The effect they have on society can be clearly felt with the rising
trend of ‘going green’.
However, David Suzuki has not always
spoken without criticism. In February
2008, he urged McGill University
students to speak out against
politicians who fail to act on climate
change, stating "What I would
challenge you to do is to put a lot of
effort into trying to see whether there's
a legal way of throwing our so-called
leaders into jail because what they're
doing is a criminal act.“
Many of the public and the media are
also doubtful that global warming even
exists, despite irrefutable evidence
from scientists all over the world.
Many of the public often criticize David Suzuki for ‘sticking his
nose where it doesn’t belong’, but the mere fact is that
environmentalists are rarely heard or recognized, and it is up
to forceful and passionate speakers like Suzuki to inspire and
communicate with the public, especially the youth.
On the debate over whether or not climate change is real evidence from countries around the world, the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for example,
have gathered evidence on extreme weather events, record
temperatures, retreating glaciers, and rising sea levels that all
point to the fact that climate change is happening right now.
In fact, many skeptics have received funding from coal and
oil companies who, for obvious reasons, want to delay action
on climate change.

As you can see by the video, David
Suzuki is an inspiration, a great
Canadian, a hero for some, and most
importantly, a man with great
concern. His works are all dedicated
to the well-being of our society.
Without him, we might already be
overwhelmed by our actions. He has
dedicated his life to preserving the
life of this planet and everything on it,
and in doing so has inspired millions
of Canadians to do their part in
saving the planet. This is why David
Suzuki deserves the title of Greatest
Canadian.
