What happens to the water?
Evaluating water availability and use in Borana, Ethiopia
SPACE talk – Monday February 7, 2011 – by Ralph Lasage
Water is a key resource in the Borana zone in Southern Ethiopia. Climate change is expected to change water availability in the future. This study
uses the STREAM model to evaluate changes in discharge under different climate change scenario’s. These changes due to climate change are
compared to modeled changes in discharge due to vegetation changes over the past 20 years. A possible adaptation to changes in water availability
is the construction of sand dams. The impact of different construction strategies on river discharge are evaluated using STREAM.
Next to the modeling exercise, a field survey was carried out to gather
data on water use by rural households. This enabled a first comparison
between households near a sand dam and households further away of
water sources.
This study produces information on current water use and gives insight in
potential future changes in water availability, due to climate change and
management strategies.
