Third Grade
2014-2015
Education and Experience
• Education
B.A. History, College of William & Mary (2002)
M.Ed. Reading, University of Virginia (2008)
• Experience
Twelve years in Virginia Beach as a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade
teacher.
Attendance
 We need your child here everyday.
 Guided thinking and rigorous, hands-on
learning experiences drive our
instruction.
 This enhancement to the learning can
not be made up at home.
Tardies
 Please have your child at school at 8:25 am
every day.
 We start our rigorous hands-on mathematical
learning right after announcements.
 So all unpacking, breakfast eating, pencil
sharpening, etc. should have been done
between 8:25 and 8:40.
 Assignments are also assigned for the
8:25 – 8:40 am time frame (morning work) that
are supposed to be finished by 8:40.
Early Release
• We teach reading up to the last minute of the day.
• Therefore if your child leaves early, he or she will miss
the valuable hands-on learning necessary to excel with
the new rigorous learning standards.
• Therefore, please make appointments for before or afterschool hours.
• If you have to, have to make an appointment during the
day, please try to make the appointments between 10:30
am and 1:00 pm so that they don’t miss the sacred
reading and math learning time.

How
Grade is
Different Than 2nd Grade
 Third graders are expected to do more work
independently.
 Study skills, organizational skills, and
research skills are being learned and
assessed.
 Students are expected to “go beyond,” also
known as rigor.
Rules and Expectations
In Third Grade
Homework
 Setting a routine for completing homework is essential.
 We will assign homework every night Monday through
Thursday. This includes:
 20 minutes of independent reading nightly with a task
 10 minutes of math
 10 minutes studying
 Check your child’s planner nightly for assignments. Train
your child to check off each assignment as he or she
completes it.
 Although it is not graded, failure to complete homework will
lower your child’s productivity grade.
 Projects will occasionally also be assigned at least one week
in advance.

Birthday Celebrations
 We all know that birthdays are
important to every child and that they
like to celebrate with their classmates.
However, sending in a food treat to the
classroom to celebrate can exclude
those children who have food allergies,
diabetes or other dietary restrictions.
Birthday Celebration Ideas
 Party favors: (bouncy balls, matchbox cars, erasers,
magnifying glasses, notepads, bubbles, etc.). You
can get these at a party supply store, dollar store,
dollar shelves at stores like Target and Michaels and
catalogs like Oriental Trading Company.
 Guest Reader: We can schedule a time for you or a
family member to come into the classroom and read
a book to the class.
 Special Birthday Notes: You are welcome to send
in a special something for students to autograph or
write a note to celebrate your child’s day.
Invitations
In fairness to all, if your child wishes to
pass out invitations for a party, and if ALL
students in the class are not going to be
invited, PLEASE distribute the invitations
outside of school. Please DO NOT send
invitations to school that do not include all
children in the class. Hurt feelings can
result far too easily when this occurs.
Bring Your Own Device
 Please read the guidelines on vbschools.com
before having your child bring a device to school.
 Students may only bring devices for which they
have signed permission slips. I will put a
permission slip in our Edmodo page if you want to
update later in the year.
 Please remember that devices will only be
allowed out when approved by the classroom
teacher for instructional purposes only.
