Tips for Effective NoteTaking
• Hand-write in your own words.
• Do NOT mindlessly copy everything.
• Listen to what is being said before
writing.
• Use a consistent writing utensil.
• Develop a system of organizing
thoughts.
• Review notes regularly and focus on
the key points.
Sound
Pitch, Dynamics, and Tone Color
Properties of Sound
• Sound is the
perceived
vibration of
an object.
Properties of Sound
• There are four properties of sound:
Pitch
Dynamics
Tone Color
Duration (not covered)
Pitch
• Pitch is how high or low a sound
is perceived to be.
– Example: In the Star Spangled Banner,
the pitch on “say” is lower than that of
“see.”
Pitch cont.
•Sound is formed by vibrations
in the air and when we count the
number of vibrations per second
that determines what we call
Frequency
Pitch vs. Noise
The distance between
the highest note and the
lowest note an
instrument can produce
is called it’s Range
Higher order question….
Think of a unique way to describe
the difference between a pitch and
noise.
Come up with at least two examples
to support your explanation
Tone Color/Timbre
Tone/Timbre(Tam-burr)- The way a
particular sound or instrument is
discussed. i.e. descriptive adjectives
(bright, dark, rich, thin, raspy, mellow,
etc…)
Tone does not include the descriptors
loud/soft or subjective things such as:
“It sounds pretty.”
What are some examples
of modern artists that
have different tone
colors?
Listen to how timbre
effects these pieces:

Dynamics
• Dynamics are the loudness or
softness in music.
• Volume is determined by the size of
the vibrating wavelength produced by
that sound.
Dynamics
• Changes in dynamics add spirit and
mood to music
• When a performer plays a note louder
than all other notes around it, this is
called an Accent.
• Dynamic Vocab: words in Italian
unique to music that tell us how loud
or soft to perform the music.
"Surprise" Symphony
Crescendo Example: Guitar solo in Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey
Higher order question….
Think of 5 examples of sound
from everyday life and give them
dynamic markings
Example: The fire alarm is
fortissimo.
