Earth Hour 2009 Toolkit
bringing the world together to fight climate change

What is Earth Hour ?
• Earth Hour is a global WWF climate change
initiative.
• Individuals, businesses, governments and
communities will turn out their lights for one hour on
Saturday March 28, 2009 at 8:30 PM to show their
support for action on climate change.
• The event began in the City of Sydney in 2007,
when 2.2 million people switched off their lights.
• In 2008, more than 50 million people around the
globe participated. In Australian capital cities alone,
58% of adults took part in the lights off campaign.
• In 2009, Earth Hour aims to reach out to 1 billion
people in 1,000 cities around the world.
Why is UnitingCare NSW.ACT involved in Earth Hour?
•
•
•
As the practical arm of the Uniting Church, UnitingCare
NSW.ACT is committed to assisting and promoting
environmental sustainability, participating in events such
as Earth Hour
Climate change affects everyone and it’s important to be
a part of the solution, rather than the problem.
Participation in this event not only raises awareness but
has a physical impact on the problem of climate change.
“Nature has a right to the protection of its eco-systems,
species, and populations in their inter-connectedness” [The
