Tuesday, 12 January 2010- An eathquake struck Haiti…
Haiti's government estimates about 230,000 people
died in the earthquake.
The Hiroshima bomb.
• The bomb devastated an area of five square miles.
• Estimates suggest the final death toll was about 140,000, of Hiroshima's 350,000
population. This includes those who died later from radiation.
• This amounts to nearly one out of three people living there and would be 215
times the number of students in this school!
• Many more people have also suffered long-term sickness and disability.
• Three days later, the United States launched a second, bigger atomic bomb against
the city of Nagasaki.
•1 million people have been killed and maimed
by mines.
•26,000 people a year become victims: that's...
•70 people a day, or around...
•one person every fifteen minutes.
•300,000 children and counting are severely
disabled because of land mines.
The civil war in Nicaragua was over before he was born, but it cost
10-year-old Marvin his leg all the same.
“ someone started a web page saying, if you hate Georgia
then sign here, and made up horrible rhymes about me.
I felt depressed. At lunch I would wait and wait for the bell
for lessons, because that was the only time I felt safe.
I didn't tell my parents for ages, because I didn't want them
to go through the stress that I was going through.
Trying to cope with it on my own was the worst thing ever.”
Famine
“ My husband died three years ago during the last big famine.
Now my son Alena is sick all the time because we have
nothing to eat. I try to feed him once a day by begging for
food. But I do not get enough.
Our crops failed last year and without a husband I find it hard
to work because I am sick also. I will keep begging. If I can get
healthy I will be able to do more work on my land."
• There are more than 1 billion people who are left
hungry every day.
• Food waste is now the second largest waste stream
sent to landfills, where it produces methane, a
deadly greenhouse gas that further impacts climate
change. Climate change, in turn, is having a deadly
impact on our food supply.
• 8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by
households in the UK every year.
• If we all stop wasting food that could have been
eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of
taking 1 in 4 cars off the road.
