Mapping Ireland’s Biodiversity
National Biodiversity Data Centre’s
information portal & mapping system
http://maps.biodiversityireland.ie/
What will the Mapping System do?
• Produce an on-line Atlas of Ireland’s Biodiversity
• Report on progress with implementation of EU Directives and
international conventions
• Provide local authorities with data for strategic planning and
development control
• Provide a resource for researchers & assist knowledge transfer
• Enable an early warning system for invasive species to be developed
• Track species distributions as they respond to climate change
National Biodiversity Database
c. 400,000 records
3,700 species
22 National databases
Target of 1 million records by end of 2009!

Management System
• Central repository for biodiversity data
•Resource for researchers, recorders, stakeholders
• On-line publishing facility
• Tools for making data & information accessible
to data users
• Efficiencies in delivery of public policy
