Why Should We Protect Our
Natural Environment?
Climate Change
• National Parks influence 10% of Britain’s land
area
• The three National Parks cover 20% of the
land area of Wales
• National Parks are vulnerable to climate
change due to their geographical location eg
mountains and coasts
Carbon Stores
Our National
Parks contain
most of Britain’s
organic soils and
peat lands which
store carbon
• Waun Fignen Felin
Carbon Stores
These soils and peat
lands store more
carbon than all the
forests of Britain and
France together
Carbon Stores Can Become
Carbon Sources
These natural carbon
stores are
increasingly
becoming sources of
carbon, contributing
to greenhouse gas
emissions
How?
Through human
influence:
• Erosion
• Soil compaction
• Overgrazing by animals
And climate change:
• Higher soil temperatures
• Less rainfall in summer
How can we stop this
happening?
