Social Networking
Applied
April 2, 2017
What is social networking?
 Websites in which users generate content,
share it, and make connections with other
users.
Examples
 MySpace: create a profile, share
pictures/videos/music/messages, contact
friends.
 Facebook: create a profile, share
pictures/videos/messages, contact friends.
 Twitter: send short 140 character status
updates.
 Blogs: Share longer posts, such as journal
entries or articles on a specific subject. Lots
of platforms. May or may not have a “friends
list” function.
What is Facebook?
 “Self-updating” address book
 Communication tool
 Photo/video sharing
 Social and/or professional resume
Communication
 Status feed: brief updates/comments to everybody





authorized to see it. Can attach photos, links to
websites.
Notes: publishes longer messages.
News feed: shows the status updates and other
recent, public activities of all your friends on your
home page.
Wall: Public notes to the person whose wall it is. Can
also attach links and photos.
Messages: Private message to people addressed,
like e-mail.
Chat: Live chat between people on Facebook at the
same time.
Facebook privacy
 You can use privacy settings to restrict who can see
the information on your profile.
 Settings include public, friends only, friends and
networks, friends and friends of friends, and certain
“lists” of friends.
 Use lists to restrict your contact information
appropriately.
 Example: you might let all friends see your e-mail
address, friends from work see your work phone #,
and family see your street address.
What is MySpace?
 Communication tool: keep in touch with your
friends.
 Photo/video/music sharing.
 Expression of yourself: customize your profile
to represent your personality and interests.
 Online entertainment: play any of the
numerous games available online.
Why did MySpace become so
popular?
 Artist-friendly tools: i.e. storing music tracks
on your profile.
 Many services collected in one site: photo,
video, and music sharing; online diary, event
invitations.
 Customizable profiles: MySpace allowed you
to edit the HTML code of your profile.
 Inclusion of search tools and categories.
Home page vs. profile page
 The home page is what loads after you sign
into your MySpace account.
 The home page allows you to manage all the
aspects of your MySpace account/profile.
 Only you can view your home page.
 Other MySpace users can only view your
profile page.
MySpace privacy
 You can use privacy settings to restrict who
can see the information on your profile.
 MySpace offers three privacy level settings:
anyone can view, anyone 18 and over can
view, and only my friends can view.
 MySpace profiles created using the new 2.0
format do not have blanket privacy settings.
You must apply privacy settings for each
module of your profile.
When you’re finished
 Always remember to sign out of your account!
