Definition
• Massage is the use of touch that is used
to manipulate tissues, gently relax
muscles and stimulates the release of
tension (ie. Waste products produced
by the muscles such as latic). Massage
stimulates the circulation, helps with
excretion of the waste products, lowers
blood pressure and aids digestion.
Cautions
• Any doubts!
• Similar to initial contra indications for
aromatherapy. E.g
• Injuries or undiagnosed conditions.
• Skin infection
• Pyrexia

Massage Techniques
• Effleurage - Stroking - is used at the
beginning and end of a massage and
connects other movements. A relaxing
movement.
• Petrissage - Kneading - relieves tension
within the muscle. Once released it produces
erythema (redness)
• Tapotement - Percussion/striking - works
deeper into the tissue and stimulates the
nervous system and aids circulation.
Health and Safety
• Ensure there are no contra-indications
• Keep fingernails short and remove
jewellery.
• Tie long hair back
• Cuts/open wounds must be covered
• Always wash your hands before and
after massage
• Document treatment if necessary.
