Digital Interface
MIDI
• Musical Instrument- digital, not analog.
• Digital- computer based, communication is
accomplished in the binary (0, 1) language of
computers.
• Interface- connection, the equipment and
software which allows digital musical
instruments and computers to communicate.
Sequencer
• Hardware and/or software
which records and plays back
MIDI (musical) events.
• MIDI events include
instructions to turn notes
on, turn notes off, select
instrument sound, set
volume, and set tempo.
• These instructions may be
recorded automatically in
live performance or entered
manually one by one.
Controller
• The “Musical Instrument”
part of MIDI.
• A digital (computer based)
musical instrument with
MIDI connectors capable of
sending and/or receiving
MIDI instructions.
Connectors
•
•
•
•
The “Interface” part of MIDI.
Originally used MIDI plugs, jacks, and cables.
Later used “Firewire” (IEEE1394).
Now uses USB connectors and cables for
hardwired connections.
• Wireless “Bluetooth” connections are
available.
Applications
• Musical Composition- most composers today use
notation software, which uses MIDI.
• Video Games- MIDI can reproduce music with
much less demand on the computer processor
because it is only instructions for making music,
not an audio recording of the music itself.
• Auto-accompaniment- MIDI can reproduce the
sound of a band playing in any selectable style.
• Non-musical events- MIDI is now being used to
control lighting and other performance effects.
