General Muscle Function
• Muscles working alongside bones produce movement, by contracting
and extension.
• They maintain posture.
• Stabilize joints by using muscles that counterattack others (Bicep
Brachii and Triceps Brachii).
• And generate heat by use of ATP and friction.
Movement Skeletal Muscle.
• Skeletal Muscle is the most abundant in the body, responsible for all
voluntary movement. Consists of light and dark bands which is
responsible for the striated look that can be seen under a microscope.
Contains many nuclei and has more mitochondria than any other cell.
Responsible for movement of limbs, fingers, toes, etc.
Movement Smooth Muscle.
• Smooth muscle works in the interior of hollow organs such as blood
vessels, stomach, intestines, gallbladder and the airways leading to
the lungs (Not striated like Cardiac and Skeletal muscles). Works to
push fluids and food down the digestive tract and the elimination of
excess waste in digestive system (Unconscious).
Movement Cardiac Muscle.
• Cardiac muscles is found the walls of the heart (Striated). It is
responsible for pumping blood within the atriums and ventricles
(Unconscious). Works with Skeletal muscles to circulate blood.
Maintaining Posture.
• Not aware of the skeletal muscles keeping us up, one tiny adjustment
after another nonstop. This is so we can maintain an erect posture.
These muscles are very hard to tire out and produce a lot of energy.
Stabilizing Joints
• Skeletal muscles pulls bones for movement by contraction they also
stabilize joints using an opposite muscles to contradict movement
ending in a balance. This skeletal muscles reinforce bone joints that
have a poor fitting socket like the shoulder girdle. This areas require
strong muscles to hold together the three bones (Humorous, clavicle,
and scapula). Muscle tendons attach to different bones to create a
movement at the joint. Ulna and humorous joint which is held by the
bicep brachii.
Generate Heat
• One of the main byproducts of movement and contraction and usage
of ATP is the heat generation which goes on. Skeletal muscle being
the most responsible for the for the heat because it accounts for over
40% of body mass. This added bonus is used to maintain body heat.
The heat is created because when ATP is created and used a
incredible amount of is lost to heat and friction. Your body contracts
your muscles to increase this heat generation when you are cold,
which is shivering.
Protection of Organs
• Your skeletal muscles in the abdomen are responsible for the
protection of the organs in the gut, digestive system, where there is
no bones to provide protection that is seen in places like the thoracic
cage.
