Muscular System
Guided Reading
1. What are the four
functions of the Muscular
System?
• Moving bones
• Pumping blood
• Moving food through
digestive system
• Controlling air movement
in and out of the lungs
2. What causes muscular
contraction?
• The brain sends a signal
through the spinal cord to
move a muscle
• Eventually the signal reaches
the nerves attached to that
muscle
• The nerve then fires, which
stimulates the muscle fibers
to move in the desired
fashion
3. Muscle Tone is defined
as?
• Muscle tone is a degree of
firmness that your body
keeps in your muscular
structure at all times
4. What are muscles
made up of?
• Muscles are made up of a
mass of fibers grouped
together
5. What are muscle fibers
made up of?
• Muscle fibers are made up
of smaller fibers called
myofibrils
6. List three types of muscles.
Where are they and are the
voluntary or involuntary?
• Smooth Muscles
– Intestines & Blood Vessels
– Involuntary
• Skeletal Muscles
– Attached to bones
– Voluntary
• Cardiac Muscles
– Heart
– Involuntary
7. What are 4 problems with
the muscular system?
• Muscle Strain
– Painful stretching or tearing of muscle fibers
• Muscle Cramp
– A muscle contracts spasmodically
or involuntarily
• Myasthenia Gravis
– Disease where muscles are weak or
easily fatigued
• Muscular Dystrophy
– Crippling disease where skeletal
muscles waste away
8. List two ways to care for
the muscular system
• Regular Exercise
• Working on maintaining good
posture
