Write these questions down Cornell

►What
are the functions of the
skeleton?
►What role do joints play in the
body?
►What are the characteristics of
bone, and how can you keep your
bones strong and healthy?
I have about 206
bones but a baby
has about 275
bones. Why do
you think that
is???
Your skeleton has 5 major functions
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Provides shape and support
Enables you to move
Protects your organs
Produces blood cells
Stores minerals and other materials until
your body needs them

Joints, ligaments, and cartilage
►A
joint is a place in the body where two
bones come together
► Joints allow bones to move in different ways
 Two kind of joints:
►Movable
►Immovable
How are movable joints held together?
Bones
► Bones
are complex
living structures
that undergo
growth and
development.
► What
bone in your
body do you think
is the longest?

Types of bones
► Compact
bone - hard and dense
► Spongy bone – has many small spaces in it
► Bone marrow – soft connective tissue inside
the bone
 Two types of bone marrow:
 Red bone marrow
 Yellow bone marrow
Bones are ALIVE
► They
contain cells and tissues and blood
and nerves
► They grow as you grow! The more you
exercise…the stronger your bones become.
What is cartilage?
► Cartilage
is a stiff yet flexible connective tissue found
in many areas in the bodies of humans and other
animals, including the joints between bones, the rib
cage, the ear, the nose, the elbow, the knee, the
ankle, the bronchial tubes and the intervertebral discs.
It is not as hard and rigid as bone but is stiffer and
less flexible than muscle.
How can you take care of your
bones?
►A
combination of a balanced diet and
regular exercise are important for a lifetime
of healthy bones.
Osteoporosis
►A
condition in which the body’s bones
become weak and break easily
