Purpose of music
videos
What is the purpose of a music video? A music video is a message/story/promo to the audience, to entertain, to
promote artists and promote brands and to get selected target groups to buy the album being released. But it's mainly to
promote the track which as been put together by the record label and the artist. A music video or song video is a short
film working with the song and creating imagery for the viewer, which can be called a promo, being produced for
promotional or artistic purposes. Music videos have main categories which boost and allow the artist and record labels
to achieve what they’re looking for, which is the purpose of the music video and help boost the potential chance of
reaching an aim and overall to make money using as many ways as possible. To gain as much success for the artist and
record label releasing the song and video, gaining a bigger image for the artist as more people would recognise the artist
and overall make more money for the record labels.
Promotion of artist
• Music videos can be made for many different reasons. Some artists use music videos to promote the band itself, giving
themselves an image. The image will attract fans and generate a fan base in the long run. For example if your band is
aimed at a more mature audience; your video should reflect that. Nirvana was a success rock band in the 90's. There song
Smells Like Teen Spirit really give the band an image. Whilst some artists make videos to promote a single song or album
launch. A band may write a song that they truly believe could be a hit and want to promote it as much as possible. So they
choose to accompanied the song with a clever or memorable music video.
•
PSY is a South Korean singer and his song Gangnam Style is a perfect example of how a video can promote a song through
a music video because the video has achieved over 1,900,000,000 hits on YouTube. Music videos can extend an artist’s
popularity and sense of style. A stylized video or simply clever one can completely change an artist’s image. This can boost
sales and fans which can further the artist. Record labels essentially do the promotion for the band itself. The perk is that
the record label has a lot of contacts and a bigger budget but they come at a higher cost and can take away the magic of
music. While being independent gives you a lot less contacts but gives you complete control on how you market your
music and produce your videos and these videos turn out being the most memorable and best music videos.

Record label
• Just like for promoting the artist, the music video is also for promoting the record label which created the album or song
with the artist, but why? why would the record label need to be promoted. Well record labels promote their name or
logos with the song to make the public aware of the label who works with the artist they like, which could lead to them
liking another artist link with the same record label, as its not just about promoting the record label, its also about
promoting other artists with that label as really it all comes down to one thing, the money the company can bring in
promoting itself and its artists. So for instance murderink which is a record label which has many artists under their name
so releasing a song by two of the most popular artists, can promote the artists under their name and the record name
itself as it the song always on time by Ja Rule and Ashanti they sing the label name in the song promoting the brand they
are under.

The song became a worldwide hit
and was Ashanti's first Hot 100
number one single and Ja Rule's
second. The song spent 2 weeks at
the top of the Billboard Hot 100
from February 23, 2002.
In 2009, it was named the 33rd
most successful song of the 2000s,
on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Songs
of the Decade Chart. A major
promotion for the artist and the
record label.
Representation
• Representation is a term used by the media and can be described by the media as a reconstruction of reality of what will
suite them. It is were media portrays particular groups, communities, ideas, or topics from a particular ideological or value
perspective. This makes them very powerful in terms of influencing ideas and attitudes. So an artist would use this in a
music video to create a fake reality in which they would want you to believe as the reality is reconstructed by the media to
make the audience believe what's going on.so for example in the song LA Confidential by tory lanez, the video tells a story
in were he cheats on his girlfriend and was played by the girl to get him in trouble, but the whole story Is a dream which
he wakes up to, the story makes you believe what you are watching is happening. Another example is grenade by Bruno
mars the story in this video is how Bruno announces his undying love for this girl but she does not care or feel the same
way so she cheats on him. Both videos are good examples on how the media reconstruct the reality of a video to make
you believe what the video is wanting you to believe.

Synergy
• Synergy is when a company releases a brand on different platforms, to make more money using these different platforms,
so for example Disney uses different platforms to promote and increase the brand image, to expand target audiences.
With things like high school musical, which was not only a movie but a cd bundle of songs, a game, a theatrical
performance and also included in Disney's outlet stores which shows you how company's use different platforms to make
more money promoting brands. Artists also use synergy to promote them self and the label there under so for example
Eminem and 50 cent, who both not only produce quality music but, were included in either TV programmes or movies.
Eminem was included in a movie called 8 mile, but produce a song called loose yourself to go with it. 50 cent on the other
hand called power and a movie called get rich or die tryin ( alongside many other movie). He produce and sang songs for
each movie and example of these are “Ambition” in the movie get rich or die tryin and he sang the theme tune for the
series power called “big rich town”. These are examples of how artists and company's use platforms to make more money
and promote images of brands.

Album sales
• Album sales are extremely important in the world of music, because the more album sales there are the more money the
artist and the record label make so it is crucial that the song when it is released it appeals to not just one target group and
try and push through barriers to reach other groups. So promoting the song is really important, which is why the
publishing of video to go alongside the song an example of this is fantasia and animated film based around the famous
piece of classical music. So “promos” are extremely important in boosting the song. Artists for years have been using
music videos to promote their song in which get more album sales. David bowie in the 1980s got his first uk number
because of his promo video ashes by ashes. Michael Jackson though was the first artist to come up with a music video with
a beginning, middle and end. Also Michael Jacksons song and video “thriller” went in to the Guinness book of records for
selling up to 9 million albums, showing you how important the promo video is for artists and their songs. Another song
which had major album sales due to the promo video was “I want to break free” by queen with a fantastic video with over
129 million views.

Male Gaze theory
The male gaze theory was created in 1975 by Laura Mulvey she believed that film audiences had to view characters from the
perspective of the heterosexual male. Meaning videos that are created with music are for the visual pleasure of male
audiences, but recently the term has begun to include both as music videos now have start to target women alongside men
as the videos created have influenced girls with appearance and fashion as they want to follow the artists with the new
images. An example of this is the scene from transformers with Megan fox, in the beginning were the car takes control with
sexual songs to try and help his new friend Shia lebouf get the girl an example of male gaze.

An example of a music video with a male gaze scene is the song by Nicki minaj anaconda showing a lot of explicit scenes that
could be referenced to male gaze scenes. Another is Rhianna's song “work” which ahs scenes of male gaze as you have drake
sitting and watching Rhianna as dances and sings proving the male gaze theory.
