Glossing Teach Review NOTES

Glossing in ASL must write everything in CAPS LETTERS.

When Fingerspelling you put (name fs-JERRY) Must have topic of Fingerspelling before you put
fs- just like when signing. I would say name then fingerspelling the name. City then
fingerspell the city, born fs where I was born….or S-T-A-C-Y

Negation in a nonmanual marker and you put an “N” above the line. Not, none deaf.

WH-questions or open ended questions have nonmanual markers, put “whq” above the line.
Who, what, where

Yes/no questions have nonmanual markers, put a “q” above the line. Do you understand.
Understand

All things manual (hands) like signs and gestures go below the line

All things non manual (not hands) like headtilts leaning forward, etc go above the line.

When using two or more English words to describe a sign, use a HYPHEN ex. MEET-YOU, SEEYOU-LATER, or COME-HERE.

When using compound signs (2 signs put together for a single meaning use a +) and
contractions (shorten form of two words). This is a plus sign (+). For example: parents is
written MOTHER+FATHER, or 3:00 is written TIME+3. Contractions can’t CAN+NOT, DO-DO
What are you doing, FOR-FOR whatever for, THREE-OF-US group of three people doing
