Danielle’s Writing Process
Step one: Brainstorm
Step two: Research
Step three: Outline
Step four: Freewrite
Step five: Actually write (notice this is the fifth step)
Step six: Revise
Your thesis…
…should be in every paragraph, rephrased.
…should include your primary sources.
Your primary source…
…should be introduced prior to your thesis.
…should be introduced with a signal phrase.
A signal phrase…
is “…a phrase, clause, or sentence that introduces a
quotation, paraphrase, or summary.”
…should include the author and the context.
Some examples…
In pop star Iggy Azalea’s music video of her charttopping hit from 2014, “Fancy,” recreates scenes from
the American comedy film, Clueless.
Rapper Tupac Shakur, in his compilation of poetry
entitled The Rose That Grew from Concrete, recites, “You
never know how strong you can be until being strong is
the only choice you have left” (78).
Wait…
How come you didn’t cite a page number in the first
example (with Iggy Azalea)?
Music videos don’t have page numbers! (Hint: neither do
songs, films, television series, etc.)
How come you didn’t include the last name inside the
parenthetical?
I already introduced Tupac!
…But if I cite the same source again, I must add the last name
to accompany a page number: Furthermore, “only God can
judge me,” follows the metaphor of the rose (Shakur 85).
