Introduction
People with SCI are at high risk of obesity, pressure sores,
cardiovascular disorders
Despite the damage in the spinal cord, the lower limbs` muscles are
intact
Functional electrical stimulation (FES) can be used to provide training

Aim and objectives
Develop an in-door FES-assisted cycling ergometer to exercise
paraplegics by stimulating single muscle group, the quadriceps
Integrate a novel assist mechanism (flywheel and electrical clutch)
to assist the legs, delay muscle fatigue and prolong the exercise
Current status
PID/Fuzzy logic-based control for FES cycling (with and without
assist mechanism)
Fuzzy logic-based closed loop control for flywheel/clutch
mechanism
Force-drop monitor (derived from clinically recorded data)

Conclusion and future work
The new proposed assist mechanism can be used to delay muscle
fatigue (by 15-17%) and prolongs the exercise

flywheel and clutch mechanism)
