CHIROPRACTIC
Dr. John Raymond Baker,DC
Chiropractic – Definition by Dr.
John Raymond Baker,DC
• The art and science of diagnosis and treatment
of somatic dysfunction resulting from improper
neural function using a conservative, nonsurgical, non-pharmaceutical approach . The
primary treatment method is via use of manual
manipulation (the “adjustment”) of the affected
joint (s) of the spine and/or extremities. The goal
is restoration of proper neural transmission and
restoration of normal joint alignment, function,
and motion.
Subluxation – Definition by the
American Chiropractic Association
• “A subluxation is a complex of functional
and/or structural and/or pathological
articular changes that compromise neural
integrity and may influence organ system
function and general health. A subluxation
is evaluated, diagnosed, and managed
through the use of chiropractic procedures
based on the best available rational and
empirical evidence. “
The Chiropractic Oath
I do hereby swear before these assembled witnesses that I will do my utmost to keep this oath as a
doctor of chiropractic.
I will light the way to the understanding of those natural laws which preserve the human body, as a
fitting temple for the soul.
I will keep the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of the sick as my foremost duty, ever searching
for and correcting the cause of their disease to the best of my ability.
I will at all times stand ready to serve humanity without distinction of race, creed, or color. I will
prevent and alleviate human suffering. I will exemplify a pattern of living in harmony with the laws of
nature.
With purity I will pass my life and practice my art. I will refrain from any act of wrong-doing. I will
regard the keeping of a patient's confidence as a moral obligation. I will at all times consider the
patients under my care as of supreme importance. I will not spare myself in rendering them the help
which I have been taught by my alma mater.
May the skillful use of my hands be so directed, that I may bring strength to the sick, relief to the
suffering, peace of mind to the anxious, and the inspiration to the human race to attain bountiful
health, that we may live this life to the fullest expression of its innate endowments.
I therefore solemnly swear to uphold these principles and precepts, to the best of my ability, so help
me God.

Normal Cervical Spine
The Chiropractic
doctor performs an
orthopaedic,
neurological,
postural physical
examination
combined with a
thorough history
taking, to collect
enough information
to make a
differential
diagnosis and see
what further testing
may be indicated.
Report of
Findings
The doctor goes over the
findings of the x-rays, combined with
the findings of the examination and
advises the patient about the nature
of the problem, what treatment is
proposed, and often, may estimate
how long the treatment may take.
Notice the spinal cord
compression in this
picture. The pressure
caused from the
misalignment in the spine
at the base of the neck
has led to restricted
blood flow to the spinal
cord tissue. The resulting
cracks and degeneration
in the spinal
cord are apparent.
Normal
vs. Diseased
“Military Neck”
Hyperflexion / Hyperextension
Injuries
(Whiplash) often result in this
sort
of presentation.
If left with cervical paraspinal
muscles
in spasm, and with loss of
normal
cervical curve, this will usually
lead
to abnormal wear and tear of
the
cervical spinal joints and thus,
To osteoarthritis, a “wear and
tear”
Disease.
Severe Degeneration
of the cervical spine
Note the loss of intervertebral
disc height and spurring, or
osteophytic formations
Chiropractic theory maintains
that such degeneration could
have been prevented by
Chiropractic intervention.
Lumbar Adjustment
Cervical
Adjustment
The neck is rotated in a gentle fashion
Until one reaches the end of the range
of motion and a quick impulse is
delivered that takes the neck beyond
The point of fixation, increasing the
range of motion and, at the same time,
Helping to break up muscle spasm.
