Definition of Vaginitis
Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina,
caused by a disruption in the normal
bacteria
Is it genetic, lifestyle or from unknown
causes? Vaginitis is not considered an
STD although it is lifestyle

Causes & Risk Factors for
Vaginitis
Cause 1:Infectious causes of vaginitis
include bacteria, yeast, and Trichomonas.
Cause 2: Bacterial Vaginosis is the most
common bacterial infection that causes
vaginitis
Cause 3: Yeast infections are not
considered to be STDs.

Symptoms of Vaginitis
Symptom 1: itching and burning in the
vagina
Symptom 2: red, swollen, painful vaginal
mucous membranes
Symptom 3: odor

Medical Tests
What tests are done by doctors to determine if you have
it?
A vaginitis test is used to diagnose vaginal infections that
don’t affect the urinary tract
Your doctor will insert a speculum into the vagina to see
and a cotton swab to get a sample of vaginal discharge
The sample is examined under a microscope for
infection

Treatment for Vaginitis
Different conditions require different
treatments:
Bacterial Vaginosis: metronidazole tablets,
metronidazole gel, or clindamycin cream
Yeast infections: antifungal cream or
suppository
Thinning the vaginal: pinpoint source of irritation
and avoid it

Summary of Vaginitis
Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina caused by a
disruption in the normal bacteria
Vaginitis would have symptoms like itching and burning
in the vagina. Red, swollen, painful vaginal mucous
membranes, and odor.
It can be treated and is not life threatening!
