Transcript RotaKids Polio Awareness Assembly

Welcome to Our 2nd
RotaKids Assembly!
• This is where we share, care and make
others aware!
• Today’s assembly is very special because
it is about what we believe in. That is
service to our communities!
• Who knows what polio is?
• Here is a song which may help you to
become more aware of this disease!
• Listen now to some more important
information about polio
Poliomyelitis
• Poliomyelitis, often called polio or
infantile paralysis, is an infectious disease
caused by the poliovirus. In about 0.5%
of cases there is muscle weakness
resulting in an inability to move
HISTORY
1789 - British physician Michael Underwood
provided the first clinical description of polio,
referring to it as "debility of the lower
extremities."
1840 - German physician Jacob von Heine
published a 78-page monograph in 1840 which
not only describes the clinical features of the
disease, but also notes that its symptoms
suggest the involvement of the spinal cord.
1908- Austrian physicians Karl Landsteiner and
Erwin Popper make the first hypothesis that
polio may be caused by a virus.
Here are some images to more vividly describe
the disease.

Why this awareness?
• As a club, we are in support of the ‘End
Polio Campaign.
• In an effort to contribute we have planted
crocuses to raise fund to send to End
Polio Campaign () to make our MARK.
• Mrs. White has brought us a crocus each
so we now have £36.00 in the ‘Kitty’ to
donate!
• The BIG question is: Can you as a school
help us to accumulate more?
We are SURE you will!
• Here is what you do:
1. Teachers-we will come around to your
class next week Monday afternoon with our
crocuses and you can buy a pot of 5 from us
for ONLY £3.00! That’s a BARGAIN!
Isn’t it?
2. Pupils ask your parents to support the
cause by giving them a letter, which we will
prepare for you.
THANK YOU!
