Sexually Transmitted Diseases
• There are more than 25 different STDs.
• At least 10 are very common in the U.S.
• 1/3 of new STD infections occur in 15-19
year olds.
• By age 24, at least 1 in 3 sexually active
people in US will have contracted a STD.
• If you contract a STD you can experience
pain, sterility, and even death.
Pubic Lice
Infectious Agent
Long-term Effects
External parasite (commonly called “crabs”).
Discomfort & infection to others (how nice of you).
Symptoms
Intense itching in the genital area or anywhere there is hair.
Transmission
Close physical contact or using clothing, bedding or towels
of infected person.
Treatment
Over-the-counter shampoos and creams and washing
bedding and clothing.

Women: pelvic inflammation disease (PID), damage to
reproductive organs, sterility, tubal pregnancies, and arthritis
if not treated.
Men: inflammation of testes, sterility, and arthritis if not
treated.
Most men and women have no symptoms (scary!). Some
symptoms include discharge and burning during urination.

Virus related to the cold sore & fever blisters virus.
Stays in the body for life- outbreaks happen repeatedly.
Rarely, can lead to blindness if infected hand touches the
eyes.
Painful blisters, on the sex organs or mouth, that break
open, scab, and heal within a few weeks. Flu-like symptoms
or no real symptoms.
Any sexual contact!
NO CURE!!! Some meds can reduce the number of
outbreaks and severity of outbreaks.
Effects on pregnant Babies can be infected (if mother has open soars). Can
women/babies
cause blindness, damage to central nervous system, &
sometimes death.

Virus
Virus can stay in the tissue or under the skin, even after wart
removal. Associated with increase of cancer to reproductive
and sexual organs.
Small, painless, cauliflower-like hard spots or bumps inside
or outside of the sexual organs. Often there are no signs.
Any sexual contact!
NO CURE!!! There is a vaccination. Can be burned or
frozen off and some creams may help.
Effects on pregnant Babies can be infected during birth.

& eventually death.
Stage 1: 10-14 days-painless sore at the infection site.
Stage 2: rashes, fever, mucous lesions, swollen lymph
glands, or hair loss.
Stage 3: the silent stage. No real symptoms.
Stage 4: after the 1st year of infection. If untreated it will
silently destroy your body (see long-term effects).

Effects on pregnant Babies can be infected before birth which may cause,

miscarriage, stillbirth, mental retardation, & other
deformities.

Virus
Most people heal completely, but some may get cancer of
the liver or eventually die.
½ of infected people have no symptoms. Others have
jaundice, nausea, cramps, dark urine, light colored feces, &
extreme tiredness.
Unprotected sex, contact with infected blood, drug needle

NO CURE!!!, but HBV vaccine can prevent infection.
Effects on pregnant Babies can be infected during birth and become carriers of
women/babies
Hep-B and may develop a life-threatening case of the
disease.

Hep-A Virus (HAV)
Most people will have symptoms for only a few weeks to a
month.
Jaundice, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea
fever, & extreme tiredness.
Fecal to mouth.
No treatment, just care until it clears up. HBA vaccine can
prevent infection.

Hep-C Virus (HCV)
Most people (3 out of 4) will have long-term symptoms that
can lead to liver disease. #1 reason for liver transplants in
U.S.
Jaundice, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, dark
urine, fever, & extreme tiredness.
Blood. Needle sharing or equipment with blood on it.
No vaccine, just some treatment to fight the disease and
slow liver disease.
Effects on pregnant None.

Damage to the immune system so it can no longer fight
infections, cancer, & eventually death.
Unexplained tiredness, fever, chills that keep coming back,
swollen glands, & weight loss.
Bodily fluids during sexual intercourse or through needle
sharing, tattooing, ear piercing, and breast milk.
NO CURE!!, just some treatment to help people stay healthy
longer.
Effects on pregnant Can be passed to baby during childbirth or breast feeding.

information & an appointment.

Materials Cup w/liquid, lab paper, pencil or pen
1) Write down your name & cup number in the “your cup” row of the
data table.
2) When told by your teacher, pick someone with whom you will
exchange liquids from your cups.
Procedures
3) Person A of the pair carefully pours their entire cup into Person
B’s cup.
4) Person B carefully pours about half of the liquid back into Person
A’s cup.
5) Person A and Person B write down each other’s names on their
data tables. (DO NOT EXCHANGE LIQUIDS WITH THE SAME
PERSON TWICE.)
6) Each student will repeat steps 3-5 two more times.
7) When finished, go back to your seat and complete the conclusion
& analysis.
