Purpose
• To find out whether society now would willingly accept
leprosy victims into the society or would history just
repeat itself.
• The purpose of this interview is to let the public realize
that those leprosy victims need not to be treated that
badly. They are still humans, so why should we shun
and scorn them solely just because of the reason that
something unfortunate happened to them? Hence, the
aim of these interview is to find out how the public
thinks of leprosy victims, and help them understand that
these ‘lepers’ not only suffer physically, they have to go
through emotional pain as well.
A Sneak Peek on Leprosy…
• Leprosy, or Hansen's disease, is a chronic
infectious disease caused by the bacterium
Mycobacterium leprae.
• This disease affects the skin, the peripheral
nerves (nerves outside the brain and spinal
cord), and the mucous membranes of the nose,
throat, and eyes.
• Though many thinks that is is contagious,
Leprosy is not highly infectious, and only spread
from one person to another only after prolonged
and close contact. (Thus, it is normally spread to
family members)
A Sneak Peek on Leprosy…
• Despite modern therapy, leprosy is still a persistent
disease in many parts of the world, and in many cases
the disfigurement and disability caused by the infection
cannot be reversed.
• The disease has almost disappeared from most
temperate countries, but it is still common in Asia, Africa,
Central and South America, and the Pacific Islands.
• Though many had leprosy before and cures were made,
the epidemiology of leprosy is still particularly difficult to
study as not only does it has a unusual pattern of
infection, this type of bacteria can never be grown in a
test tube.
List of Interview Questions
General Questions on Leprosy…
• What do you know about leprosy?
- Where did you hear it from? Do you think that it
is reliable?
• How do you think leprosy came about?
• Do you believe that leprosy is a ‘punishment
from God’ from the olden days? Why do you
think that way? Hence, what do you view leprosy
as?
List of Interview Questions
In a CITIZEN’S point of view…
• In the past, the society used to shut out all the victims of leprosy. If
one of your loved ones is victim, what would you do?
• What if the government reported that there is a sudden outbreak of
leprosy in Singapore? How would you react?
• If the government sets up an organization to help and show care
and concern to leprosy victims, would you help if they needed as
much help as they can get from its citizens?
• How would your thinking change if leprosy is not a terminal illness?
In an EMPLOYER’S point of view…
• If you are an employer, would you accept an ex-leprosy victim into
your company? Why?

3 Difficulties
• One of the difficulties I met was finding the free time to
interview my parents due to their hectic schedule.
• Secondly, since I have neither camera nor recorder,
hence I couldn’t record the interview.
• Lastly, the major difficulty was
during the interview. People
nowadays know very little about
leprosy as it happened very long
time ago, hence the information I
received is very brief. (this is due
to the leprosy victims dying down
and also partially that presently,
leprosy can be cured and no
longer so dangerous).
2 Things Learnt
• Interviewer’s job is not as simple as it
looks. He/she must actually know the
topic inside out before approaching
others to get their opinions.
Moreover, when the interviewee is
clueless about the topic, the reporter
must be the one to inform him/her on
the topic.
• Also, an interview aims to get
opinions from the general public, not
facts with can be easily ‘google-ed’.
1 Thing In The Future
and man
Good Attitude.
• Since we had researched so much
on leprosy, I would like to visit a
leprosy home to at least understand
how a leprosy victim actually feels
rather than getting the information
out from the computer every time.
• Moreover, these victims have my
admiration for their strength and
perseverance to live on through life
even though they have disabilities
and are still shunned by the society
up till now.
