Contributor to Safety Injection In Immunization Service
Auto-disables Syringes & Safety Box
For Numerous Immunization Program
Why AD ?
Disposable Syringe Re-use
Reuse of disposable syringes and needles leads to the transmission of
blood-borne pathogens. To help prevent reuse of disposable syringes and
needles, WHO, UNICEF and UNFPA urge that, by the end of 2003, all
countries
should
use
only
auto-disable
(WHO/V&B/99.25 – December 1999).
syringes
for
immunization,
Reuse of disposable and needles lead to :
20 million cases of hepatitis B (HBV)
2 million cases of hepatitis C (HCV) .
Approximately 260 000 cases of HIV and other infections, such as
abscesses and septicemia each year (UNICEF, 2010)
5 to 10 percent of some 16 billion injections
administered worldwide each year are
given for immunization.
Unsafe injection practices can seriously
impede the progress made by
immunization programmes and have a
substantial effect on global immunization
coverage.
The reuse of standard single-use disposable
syringes and needles places the general
public at high risk of disease and death.
Hepatitis B virus: HBV is highly infectious and causes the highest number of
infections: in developing and transitional countries 21.7 million people
become infected each year, representing 33% of new HBV infections
worldwide
Hepatitis C virus: Unsafe injections are the most common cause of HCV
infection in developing and transitional countries, causing 2 million new
infections each year and accounting for 42% of cases.
Human immunodeficiency virus: Globally nearly 2% of all new HIV
infections are caused by unsafe injections. In South Asia up to 9% of new
cases may be caused in this way. Such proportions can no longer be
ignored.
The auto-disable syringe
Equipment of choice for administering vaccines, both in routine
immunization and mass campaigns, presents the lowest risk of person-toperson transmission of blood-borne pathogens (such as hepatitis B or HIV) .
“ Safety boxes”, puncture-proof containers –
For the collection and disposal of used disposable and auto-disable
syringes, needles and other injection materials – reduce the risk posed to
health staff and the general public by contaminated needles and syringes.
Tips:
AD syringes always need to be used together with safety box. It not just
help solving syringe reuse presentation, but also help solving the medical
waste management problems as well.
