AIDS and HIV in Africa
By: Valerie Anias
What is AIDS and HIV?
• HIV: This infects and destroys helper T
cells of the immune system.
• AIDS: HIV causes reduction in helper T
cells and this is when HIV becomes AIDS
(when not treated). The AIDS virus is also
known as: human immunodeficiency virus.
HIV AND AIDS IS A
GROWING
EPIDEMIC IN
AFRICA
AIDS/HIV Population
• There is an estimated 25 million people
living in Sub-Saharan Africa with HIV.
• In 2003 about 2.2 million people died
because of AIDS.
• The estimations are taken from men and
women between the ages of 15-49.
Women with AIDS/HIV
• In Africa 70% of people are infected with
HIV, about 57% are women.
• Studies have shown that women usually
become infected with AIDS a year after
losing their virginity.
• Women are the largest carriers with this
disease due to the lack of control over who
their partners are.

hospital.
Children Effected by AIDS
• Since there is such a high
population with adults
with AIDS, many of the
children are becoming
orphans .
• As the years go by, about
15 million children have
become orphans due to
their parents dying of
AIDS.
Why is AIDS/HIV a problem?
• Most women can not get birth
control, to stop from getting
pregnant and passing it on to
their unborn children.
• Most women do not have the
courage to ask their partner to
use a condom; there is a high
sexual violence rate and
women do not know what
would happen if they did not
obey their spouses decision.
• There is AID/HIV treatment in
Africa, only 50,000 out of 29.4
million people with HIV or
AIDS get it.
Most Infected Countries
• The most infected countries in Africa and the
Caribbean are: Botswana, Cote d’lvoire,
Ethiopia, Guyana, Haiti, Kenya, Mozambique,
Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa,
Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
• In these countries adult HIV has risen,
unexpectedly, by 24%.
• The people Botswana and Zimbabwe have a life
expectancy of only 30 years.
What Needs to Change
• Gender roles: many women do not have a
choice on who their sexual partners are or who
they marry.
• Rape: There is a lot sexual violence against
women.
• People encourage them to get access to postexposure prophylaxis, which may help prevent
HIV.
• Unfortunately, most women in Africa can not get
the treatment.
Bush’s Plan for Africa’s AIDS/HIV
• Bush proposed a plan to give 15 billion
dollars in 5 years.
• He intended to : Prevent 7 million new
infections with voluntary testing and
counseling, Treat 2 million people, infected
with HIV, in the most poorest and infected
countries, and care for 10 million HIV
infected individuals and orphans with
AIDS.
• Bush is going to set up Central Medical Centers
which has expertise in HIV and infectious
diseases, Primary Satellites which will be
independent medical centers with doctors,
nurses, pharmacists, counselors, and medical
technicians, Secondary Satellites which is
similar to Primary Satellite but they fill
prescriptions and perform standard protocols,
but the staff are not as well trained as those at
Primary Satellites. Other Central Medical
Centers are: Rural Satellites and Mobil Units
which consist of lay technicians, rotating nurses,
and local healers.
• In this picture, the
presidents of Niger,
Gambia, Benin,
Ghana, Cape Verde,
Mali and Sierra Leone
came to Senegal to
meet Mr. Bush.
