APEC Dengue Workshop and
Training Course
Dec.2-Dec.3,2005
Welcome Address
Dear Colleagues,
The Center for Disease Control (CDC), Department of Health Taiwan, is greatly honoured and pleased
to invite you to attend the ‘APEC Workshop and Training Course on:Virological Surveillance, Diagnosis,
and Molecular Epidemiology of Dengue Fever’ from December 2 to 3, 2005.
Dengue fever is a viral illness that occurs in most tropical and sub-tropical areas. The global prevalence
of dengue has grown dramatically in recent decades. Dengue fever has put 2.5 billion people at risk and
has become a major international public health concern.
As a result of urbanization, growing worldwide communication, and abnormal weather, dengue fever has
turned into one of the most serious arthropod-borne virus infection in Southeast Asia. In recent years,
dengue fever outbreaks have spread through Southeast Asian countries, because of the close
commercial links and air travel. A DEN-1 outbreak in 1987-1988 and a DEN-2 outbreak in 2001-2002
occurred in the southern part of Taiwan resulting in several hundreds of dengue hemorrhagic fever cases.
These outbreaks seriously threatened the population’s safety and raised public concerns. To face this
issue, a joint dengue fever control center was set up, by the Department of Health, to create integrated
programs for the efficient prevention and control of the disease.
This workshop is the third international dengue fever conference held in Taiwan since the first was coorganized with CDC, USA, in December 2002. We have invited numerous expert speakers to share their
ideas, visions, and suggestions on dengue research. Through discussions and lectures in this conference,
we expect updated information regarding Virological Surveillance, Diagnosis and Molecular Epidemiology
of Dengue. In addition, the latest investigation for developing vaccines and therapy against dengue will
be discussed. Our mission is to construct a laboratorial base network for dengue surveillance under the
APEC Health Task Force electronic platform. We hope to enhance regional cooperation between APEC
members and effectively control dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever.
The ‘APEC Workshop and Training Course on Virological Surveillance, Diagnosis, and Molecular
Epidemiology of Dengue’ promises to be a particularly exciting and scientifically stimulating event. Your
participation will indeed efficiently contribute to the success of this meeting. Please mark this event down
on your calendar now, and we look forward to seeing you in Taipei this December.
Background
Dengue has become one of the most important infectious diseases in the
world in recent years. It is a health problem of many members of APEC,
causing significant social cost and economic losses. Due to intense
international air travel, dengue has to be controlled through international
cooperation. Taiwan CDC of Chinese Taipei and CDC-USA had jointly hold the
first training course on “Molecular epidemiology of dengue viruses” on 2-6,
December 2002, in Taipei. This was followed by a second workshop on “APEC
Control of Dengue Outbreaks: Regional Cooperation Workshop” on 17-21,
November 2003, in Kaohsiung. On April 2004, the first Health Task Force (HTF)
meeting of APEC approved Chinese Taipei’ proposal to hold a conference on
the topic of “Virological Surveillance, Diagnosis, and Molecular Epidemiology
of Dengue” on 2-7, December 2005 in Taipei. The organization committee has
organized this conference into two parts; a workshop, which is open to all
interested participants; and a training course, which is reserved for those
representatives assigned from each member economies of APEC.
Goal
The aim of this conference is to provide updated information in the fields
of surveillance, diagnosis, molecular epidemiology and control of dengue
through lectures and discussions by leading experts. In addition,
updated knowledge on dengue vaccine research and drug discovery will
be reviewed. The training course will contain lectures, panel discussions
and practical trainings on molecular diagnosis, serological diagnosis,
and molecular epidemiology. One of the goals of this conference is to
establish a dengue network with laboratory based surveillance system
among all APEC member economies. It is anticipated that future
cooperation will be established to facilitate the communication of
member economies in dengue surveillance, clinical and laboratory
diagnoses, prevention, clinical treatment and control.
